It's hump day, and the week is all downhill from here... Today we have a few stories dealing with competition in the smartphone and smart speaker markets:

The iPhone and Google Pixel are taking a bite out of Samsung’s declining consumer base

The fall of the Galaxy Note7 has Samsung's smartphone customers seeking new brands. Now, 40% of current Samsung consumers say they won't buy another phone from the brand — that's a 6% increase since the first week of the phone's U.S. recall on Sept. 15.

iPhone 7 performance leaves Google Pixel far behind

Good try, Google. The new Google Pixel phones were released yesterday to much hoopla, but not before a lot of leaks made the world aware of the features and foibles of the latest smartphones from Google-land. Not only were most pundits aware ahead of yesterday's announcements that the Pixel would look remarkably like an iPhone 7, but benchmarks began showing up in Geekbench 4 several weeks ago. • Google Daydream, a VR headset that will hopefully be given iOS compatibility in the future
  • Google Home; think of this as Amazon Echo without Alexa and using Google Assistant instead
  • Google Wi-Fi, a router that can be bought in a 3-pack for network extension
  • and last but not least, the Google Chromecast Ultra, which unlike the 4th-generation Apple TV, actually supports 4K streaming

October starts with a whimper from some of Apple's competitors, who are either getting out of competing markets or about to jump into them. We also look a new product for those who love that "new Mac smell":

  • Microsoft bows out of the smartwatch market, with no plans to make a third-generation Microsoft Band (were there really first- and second-generation Bands?)
  • KGI's crack analyst Ming-Chi Kuo seems to be making forecasts for the past
  • The new Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones come out tomorrow, and you are excused if you think they look pretty much like an iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
  • Twelve South outs a new line of novelty items for Apple fans
