Bipartisan Senate team demands an Apple answer on why it removed VPN apps from Chinese App Store

It's about time someone called out Apple CEO Tim Cook on being a bit of a hypocrite. Earlier this year, Cook received the free speech award at Newseum's 2017 Free Expression Awards, where he was quoted as saying "First we defend, we work to defend these freedoms by enabling people around the world to speak up. And second, we do it by speaking up ourselves.". Well, Mr. Cook, Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy and Republican Senator Ted Cruz would like some answers on why Apple basically acquiesced to Chinese demands that Virtual Private Network (VPN) apps be pulled from the Chinese App Store.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is officially underway tomorrow, but plenty of companies have made announcements about new products that will be of interest to fans of Apple. We have info about two of those products lines today, as well as about how Apple has acquiesced to the Communist government of China in removing The New York Times apps from the Chinese App Store:

  • Now you can toast bread, make coffee, and gaze into a connected mirror, all of these devices coming from Griffin Technology
  • Ring announces the Floodlight Cam, an outside security light, camera, and siren that works with the Ring app
  • China doesn't like the NYT's coverage, so they've ordered Apple to stop carrying the NYT apps

Apple announces 'significant' environmental progress in China

Apple has announced a “significant commitment” by major supplier Lens Technology to run its Apple operations on entirely renewable energy. This unprecedented commitment, combined with zero waste compliance from all final assembly sites, furthers Apple’s efforts to help manufacturers lower their carbon footprint and reduce waste in China, helping to advance China’s transition to a new green economy, according to Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives.
