Fitbit dominates health and fitness wearables (but look out for the Apple Watch 2)

Fitbit dominated the “basic band” sector of the wearables market in the second quarter 2016, with 3.7 million shipments, according to Canalys. Total shipments of basic bands, which are mainly health and fitness trackers, exceeded nine million units, adds the research group.

Worldwide shipments of wearable devices are expected to reach 110 million by the end of 2016 with 38.2% growth over the previous year, according to the (IDCWorldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker. The Apple Watch will continue to dominate the smartwatch market, though sales may slow down as potential buyers and upgraders wait for the second iteration of the smartwatch.

In less than a year, the Apple Watch has over 50% of smartwatch sales

New data from Juniper Research shows the Apple Watch has claimed 52% of global smartwatch shipments in 2015, despite only launching at the end of April. Its popularity far eclipsed that of rival vendors, with Android Wear shipments comprising less than 10% of sales for the year, according to the research group.
