AWT Health Club: Lark, a conversation about your health

AWT Health Club: Lark, a conversation about your health

Readers of the AWT Health Club column know that one of my pet peeves is entering data into health apps. Whether it’s trying to enter Weight Watchers Points into their app (I gave up), entering calories eaten into any number of other apps, or trying to figure out much activity I’ve engaged in, it’s a pain in the gluteus maximus and I don’t like it. Well, a new app called Lark - Personal Weight Loss Coach and 24/7 Nutritionist (free) wants to change all of that.

AWT Health Club: Ahoy there, mateys!

This is my first Health Club post for a while. Between some family issues and then going on vacation, it’s been difficult to get the time to write about health-related apps and topics. I’m currently on a cruise, which is usually considered the antithesis of a healthy vacation. We have a few days at sea (I’m currently between Greenland and Iceland…) so it’s the perfect time to talk about staying healthy while traveling.

AWT Health Club: Keeping your brain sharp

AWT Health Club: Keeping your brain sharp

Last week's Health Club topic was motivation; it appears that I needed some. My week was pathetically bad, with my excuses being that I had to move my parents back to their home after my Dad's stay at a local skilled nursing facility and that once again, it was rainy. On the plus side, this week is forecast to be sunnier, warmer and drier than last, and I will be able to devote more time to my health.

Our topic this week is keeping your brain sharp. Work by scientists and the medical research community has shown that it should be possible for the brain to be “trained” to create new pathways and places for memory and cognition to occur. You’ve probably seen and heard ads from Lumosity, which talk about neuroplasticity and how their games can help memory at any age.

AWT Health Club: RunKeeper

AWT Health Club: RunKeeper

Other than a few stints over the years when I was training for and running 5Ks, I have never been a runner. I prefer to take the world at a slower pace with trail walks instead, but that doesn’t mean I can’t use what’s undeniably one of the best running apps on the market, RunKeeper (free, but with $39.99 in-app purchase for RunKeeper Elite and other IAPs for training plans).

AWT Health Club: Withings Blood Pressure Monitor

AWT Health Club: Withings Blood Pressure Monitor

This week for the AWT Health Club column we'll take a look at a vital piece of the overall cardiovascular health picture -- blood pressure. Since June of 2011 I have used a Withings Blood Pressure Monitor (US$129.95, affiliate link) to keep tabs on my blood pressure. My family has a history of high blood pressure, so the Blood Pressure Monitor and the companion Withings Health Mate app (free) have been a great way for me to capture my BP readings on a regular basis for almost four years now.

AWT Health Club: Chocolate Easter Bunnies and WebMD

Another week, another chance to get healthier… or did you bite the ears off of too many chocolate bunnies? My personal goals were once again thwarted; my heel’s feeling better, but I’ve had a very painful toothache for the last week that has not yet been fixed and the combination of pain and fatigue has kept me sidelined. However, as you’ll see on my personal stats, I still managed to increase my daily average steps.

AWT Health Club: Withings Smart Body Analyzer

How did the last week go for those of you who decided to take the challenge and start (or keep) tracking your health? For me, the week was kind of a wash; my Achilles tendon was hurting, which kept me from walking a lot. However, I still managed to get some walking in… Sadly, I was bad over the weekend and actually ended up 0.3 lb from last week…
