Here’s how Apple can simplify its Mac laptop line-up

In a note to clients — as noted by Forbes — analyst Jeff Lin of IHS Market predicts that, when Apple debuts its 16-inch MacBook Pro, the company will quit making the 15.4-inch model. Makes sense as Apple may be considering a streamlining of its laptop line.

Lin says the supersized-laptop will start production in September at a monthly production volume of 39,000 units and use the Coffee Lake-H Refresh, Intel's fastest 45-watt mobile processor to date with as many as eight cores. Thanks to narrower bezels on the display, it’s expected to have pretty much the same physical dimensions as the 15-inch laptop.

When it comes to the 16-inch MacBook Pro (which, you should note, has NOT been confirmed by Apple), Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has forecast that it will will switch from the controversial butterfly keyboard to a scissor mechanism. The 16-inch MacBook Pro is expected to debut this fall with a price starting at $3,000. It’s anticipated to pack an LCD (not OLED) screen with a 3072 x 1920 resolution.

Chances the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro will be discontinued, according to the Sellers Research Group (that’s me): 90%. It would simplify the product line if Apple offered a 16-inch MB Pro and up-sized the 13-inch model to 14 inches. Also, I’d love to see Apple offer an 11-inch or 12-inch MacBook with pricing under $1,000.

These moves would make an easy-to-understand product grid: two pro Mac laptops and two consumer models.
