Fluance’s Ai40 powered bookshelf speakers offer great sound at a good price

Fluance’s Ai40 powered bookshelf speakers — available on Amazon for $199.99. — are some of the best speakers in their price range. They’re active speakers with an integrated 70W Class D amplifier (35 watts per channel).

Some wireless speaker systems feel and sound cheap with their plastic speaker enclosures. Not so the Ai40 cabinet, which is hand-made with engineered MDF wood to suppress resonance and distortion for accurate response, increased warmth and an overall more natural sound.

The 15-pound Ai40 also packs a 1-inch, silk, soft-dome, ferrofluid cooled tweeters and offer with 5-inch, woven glass fiber composition drivers with butyl rubber surrounds.

The result — thanks also to Fluande’s AptX enhanced audio technology — is clean, undistorted bass, a clear midrange, transparent natural highs, and impressive bass. It’s all driven by a 40-watt amplifier, which delivers a truly impressive frequency response of 40Hz to 20kHz

Set-up is a breeze. You can stream your music from a turntable, computer, TV, or mobile device thanks to the Fluance speakers’ Bluetooth Aptx Technology  The Ai40s will automatically try to pair the first time you power ‘em up. You can also connect directly to an audio source through RCA/Aux or Bluetooth aptX without the need for a separate amplifier or receiver

If you’re looking for speakers with eye-popping aesthetics, the Ai40 Powered Bookshelf Speakers aren’t for you. They have no grills, weigh 15.1 pounds, and measure 10.9 x 6.5 x 7.6 inches. Color options are “black ash” and “lucky bamboo."

The right-hand speaker is home to a volume control/power button on the front, the wire connection for the left-hand speaker on the back, and a Bluetooth pair reset button. The power jack, also on the back, connects to an external power supply brick.

The Ai40s come with an infrared remote control that can be used to turn the speakers on and off, mute them, adjust the treble or bass, and increase or decrease the volume.

I’ve heard some complaints about the Ai40’s lack of more input options. However, if you really good sound at a very reasonable price, give ‘em a lesson. You’ll be impressed.
