It's great to watch videos on services like YouTube and Vimeo, or listen to music online...but what if you want to either keep some of that content locally or download it to your favorite Mac or iOS device for travel? That's the idea behind Softorino YouTube Converter 2 (SYC 2 - US$19.95 for lifetime single license), a new version of the classic YouTube downloader that is even easier and faster to use.
Once installed, the app is drop-dead simple to use. You can either search YouTube or other video services with search terms like "Intelsat launch" (see screenshot below) or if you see something on a service that you want to download, just use Command-C to copy the highlighted URL and it is automatically copied into SYC 2. Next, select the type of media you wish to convert to (video, audio or ringtone), the video resolution or audio format, or -- for ringtones -- the length of the ringtone.
Next, click on either the Mac the app is running on, another device you wish to save your content to, or choose to save to iTunes. Finally, click the big orange Convert & Transfer To button and you're in business.
I tried SYC 2 with a few YouTube videos and Vimeo, with both HD (1080p) and UHD 4K videos, and it was incredibly fast. The search capability is also very helpful -- I like to watch footage of old jetliners on YouTube, and all I needed to do was enter in the type of aircraft to get a listing of videos. SYC 2 allows you to even queue up a group of videos for download, which speeds up the process even more.
SYC 2 is perfect for anyone who wants to create a personal archive of videos or wants to download music from places like Soundcloud as it takes the hassle out of downloading the content to your Mac and preparing it for view on other devices like an iPhone or iPad. At $19.95, it's an entertainment bargain!
