The Mac’s global market share is up; no, wait, it’s down

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. Apple saw its Mac sales grow 0.3%, holding onto fourth place in worldwide traditional computer sales with 7.3% market share.

HP retained the top spot and further lengthened its lead with nearly 23% share of the market. Lenovo held the second position with 21.6% market share. Dell remained in the third position with 16.1% market share, according to IDC.

No, wait, Apple has dropped to fifth place in global computer sales, according to Gartner. This research group says Mac sales dipped 5.6% year-over-year with third quarter 2017 sales of approximately 4.6 million Mac, giving it 6.9% of the global market share.

According to Gartner, in the third quarter of 2017, HP and Lenovo were in a virtual tie for the top spot in the PC market based on shipments with 21.8% and 21.4% of market share, respectively. The research group says Dell is in third place with 15.2% market share, while Asus takes fourth place with 7.3% market share.

Neither IDC nor Gartner figure iPad sales into the market share equation.
