The DKnight Big MagicBox portable Bluetooth speaker offers surprisingly sound considering its low (under $60) price, though it won’t appeal to audiophiles. Then, again, that’s not the target audience.
That audience consisted of folks who want an affordable wireless speaker that sounds good and which is easily transported to use with iOS devices. And, in that regard, it shines. Measuring 8.8 x 3.4 x 3..3 inches and weighing 1.4 pounds, it can fit in a suitcase or big backpack for a day trip.
Its tubular design makes it easy to grasp with one hand, even as one flat side makes it easy to be placed on a surface without it rolling off. It’s coated with soft touch rubber which protects your speaker and also the surface you want to place it on.
The Dknight Big MagicBox’s physical controls (for play/pause, skip, previous, volume up and down) are atop the speaker, so you can control the music via both the source and the speaker itself. There’s even a button that’ll answer calls on the speaker thanks to the built-in microphone. This means you can access the calling features on your smartphone with hands free operation, with the integrated high definition microphone that uses an echo cancelling chipset for detecting your voice with clarity and precision.
That’s cool. Even cooler is the ability to lift the plastic cover off the speaker to access the charging port and 3.5mm input. The ability to keep these the ports out of the way and out of sight until needed helps maintain the Big MagicBox’s sleek, streamlined look. Despite the relatively svelte form factor, the DKnight speaker packs a 4000mAh battery that powers the design for about 12 hours on a single charge.
The speaker is touted as having “advanced bass enhancement” and “stunning stereo sound.” That’s a bit of marketing hype, but the bass is certainly above average for a speaker this size and in this price range thanks to two 52mm total 20W of total acoustic drivers. The audio spectrum is respectively wide. Volume is also fine; the speaker system pumps out enough volume to fill your average-size office or room at home. The audio was clear with little distortion even at high volumes.
The speaker is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, but works with all Bluetooth-enabled 2.1 and above devices.
The Dknight Big MagicBox packs good sound in a nice-looking package at an affordable price. And that’s what most folks will want in a wireless speaker like this.
