Happy Friday, this is Steve Sande for Apple World Today, and this is the AWT News Update for August 5, 2016.
Shares in Apple ended up this week at $107.48 per share at the close of trading today, up from the open this week of $104.44. The announcement of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 apparently had no effect or actually helped Apple’s fortunes. We’ll see what will happen next month as Apple’s announcement of the next-generation iPhone will probably result in either a big surge or conversely, a hefty drop in the share price.
One of the most admired makers of Apple accessories, Griffin Technology, was today purchased by Incipio, a global consumer technology company. Incipio has purchased Incase and also purchased keyboard manufacturer ClamCase, so it’s obvious the company consolidating the Apple accessory market. Griffin was literally founded on a kitchen table in Paul Griffin’s home in 1992, and it’s great to see that Incipio will let the company continue as a separate brand.
Forbes is reporting that sources say Apple’s working on a custom Bluetooth radio chip that could be used with wireless EarPods. The chip is apparently designed to use very little power, which has been an issue with Bluetooth headsets in the past. Apple acquired Passif Semiconductor in 2013 to work on the energy-efficient chip and originally had plans to release the EarPods in 2015, but delayed the project when battery life didn’t meet the company’s goals. There’s no word on when the alleged EarPods will arrive, although timing them for release with the next-generation iPhone without an audio port would be perfect.
