Hi, this is Steve Sande for Apple World Today, and this is the AWT News Update for August 29, 2016. Here are several of today’s Apple news highlights.
As you probably saw on the Apple World Today website or social media feeds earlier today, Apple has announced its event to introduce the next-generation iPhone. The event will be held on September 7, 2016 and will start at 10 AM PT. Now while we are almost 100% certain that the new iPhone will be announced, we’re still not sure of the name or features. It’s expected that this will be the iPhone 7, although the similarity of the case design to the present iPhones might result in a different name. We know that it will have a larger base storage amount — 32GB instead of 16GB — and that it will most likely have a top storage tier of 256GB. It’s also quite likely that the new iPhone will dispense with the 3.5mm audio jack in favor of using the Lightning port. Most pundits believe that the Plus model will have a two-lens camera for higher photo quality, with a camera similar to that in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus being standard on the 4.7-inch iPhone 7. There was news today that share prices were rising for a company called Energous that is developing a new wireless charging technology. Apple and Energous have been working together for a while, and there’s a possibility — however remote — that the new iPhone will feature charging at a distance. Finally, it’s expected that waterproofing will be a key feature of the new phone.
We’re also expecting to see an announcement of the Apple Watch 2 running watchOS 3 at the event. Although a new leak says that the battery in the new device will have 35% more capacity, that extra power will be needed to power the GPS chip expected to debut in the new Watch.
It’s unlikely that Apple will introduce any new Macs at the event. Although announcements of any upgraded Macs are long overdue, the company will most likely hold a separate event to focus on its desktop and laptop lines. If anything is announced, it’s most likely that Apple will focus on the MacBook and MacBook Pro lines. Persistent rumors have pointed toward a new MacBook Pro with an improved processor, much thinner design, and a special OLED display over the keyboard that changes appearance based on what app is being run. That new MacBook Pro will also be likely to replace existing ports with USB-C ports that can be also be used to support Thunderbolt 3.
Finally, and keeping in line with the news about the Apple event, Siri has been updated to respond to queries about September 7th with a series of snarky and humorous responses. If you tell Siri “See you on September 7th”, you’ll get responses including “An auspicious day!,” “And the 8th, and the 9th, and the 10th…in fact, I’ll be here all year,” “Be there or be heptagonal,” “Do you remember, the 7th day of September…ba da ya, dancing in September!,” and “I can’t wait for National Acorn Squash Day either. Mmmm.”
That’s all for today; We’ll be back tomorrow afternoon with another edition of the AWT News Update.
