Apple has a new executive. Tor Myhren, who was the former president and chief creative officer for advertising firm Grey Group, has joined Apple as Vice President of Marketing Communications. Myhren reports directly to Tim Cook and will lead a group that works on advertising and packaging design. Myhren oversaw creation of a lot of innovative campaigns while at Grey, such as ETrade’s “Talking Baby” and DirecTV’s “Cable Effects” ads. Myhren is replacing Hiroki Asai, who retired from Apple recently after an 18 year career with the firm.
For those of you who are fans of correct grammar, you may have missed out on a recent debate between Andreessen Horowitz partner Benedict Evans and analyst Micheal Gartenberg on Twitter. I saw an early tweet in this debate, in which one of the two asked if the plural of iPad Pro was “iPads Pro”. Apple Senior VP of Marketing Phil Schiller got into the fray, stating that “One need never pluralize Apple product names”. In response to Evans wondering how he could say he had used two iPad Pros, Schiller responded “Mr. Evans used two iPad Pro devices.” Schiller’s grammatical comments seem a little off, since that would mean that it’s OK to say “I have 3 Macintosh”, arguing that some nouns are both plural and singular — like deer and clothes. BusinessInsider then popped up, noting that Apple’s own press releases refer to iPhones in the plural form. Whatever. Regardless of Schiller’s attempts at being a grammar cop, I will still refer to having two iPads, two iPhones, and two Macs.
Apple’s partnership with Hermes on fashion leather Apple Watch bands has been successful for both companies. Now a fashion industry newsletter has noted that luxury fashion brand Coach will be making new bands for the Watch. Eight different bands will be available starting this summer, in colors of white, black, red and brown. Some may have charms attached, while others are ruggedly stitched. The price tag? About $150 for each band.
We’ll be back tomorrow afternoon with another edition of the AWT News Update.
