The music/cinema/media/tech carnival known as SXSW kicks off in Austin, Texas this Friday, and with tens of thousands descending on the city for the many events through March 20, traffic is sure to be awful and Uber will be using surge pricing. To get around the city easily without needing a rental car or standing in line for taxis, attendees might want to consider taking mass transit. Apple Maps has added transit directions for Austin just in time for the event.
Added in iOS 9, transit directions still aren't widely available, but Apple is rolling out cities as data becomes available. When used, it's possible to see routes, departure and arrival times, and station locations close to venues.
Apple's transit directions in Apple Maps are powered by Embark and HopStop, two companies acquired by Apple over the past few years. Data sources associated with each location feed the directions in real-time, providing updates to schedules as they happen.
The addition of Austin is the first major update to transit directions since Los Angeles was added in December. Apple World Today received multiple tips from readers about the new transit direction availability for Austin.
