The Acer H277HU is the best monitor for use with a MacBook

As I’ve said before, my 12-inch MacBook wouldn’t work as my primary Mac, but it’s a great complement to my iMac when I’m traveling. However, if the teeny laptop is your main machine, you should consider investing in the Acer H277HU display so you can use the MacBook as a “desktop” system when needed.

As best as I can tell, the Acer H7 series monitors are the first to support USB Type-C — and a single USB-C port is the only port on the Apple laptop. The great thing about the Acer H7 displays are that they charge the MacBook even while offering more screen real estate and better speakers.

The 27-inch H277HU boasts WQHD (2560 x 1440) display resolution. The display has 100% sRGB coverage and 6-axis color adjustment, allowing you to easily adjust color, color temperature and saturation. IPS technology lets you view crisp, clear images up to 178 degrees horizontally and vertically. A 100,000,000:1 maximum contrast ratio, 4ms response time, 16:9 aspect ratio, 350 cd/m2 brightness and 16.7 million colors contribute to the picture quality. Images look great, especially if you haven’t been spoiled (as I have) by a Retina display iMac.

The H277HU’s built-in 3W speakers, though not as good as external speakers (especially ones with a subwoofer), provide decent sound for listening to your tunes, watching videos, and playing games thanks to the Acer TrueHarmony and DTS Sound technology.

The Acer display is a good aesthetic match with the MacBook, especially if you have a gold colored laptop. It has a zero-frame design with a gold-colored aluminum bezel and brushed-metal stand. The stand can tilt from -5 degrees to 15 degrees.

Of course, the H277HU works with other computers besides MacBooks thanks to a a single HDMI and a single DVI connector. It also sports two USB 3.1 ports for connecting peripherals.

The Acer H277HU display is available at Acer resellers and leading online retailers in the United States for $499.99. If that’s too much for your budget, there’s also the 25-inch H257HU (2560x 1440 resolution) for $370 or the 27-inch H277H (1920 x 1080 resolution) for $280.

If you only use your MacBook while traveling or as a back-up Mac, you probably won’t need a separate display. Otherwise, the Acer H277HU wins my recommendation for the best monitor for the Apple laptop.
