Rumor: Apple alloy expert to lead materials engineering at Tesla, SpaceX

Elon Musk — CEO and CTO of SpaceX, and co-founder, CEO and product architect of Tesla Motors — has hired Apple’s alloy expert Charles Kuehmann to lead materials engineering at both companies, reports electrik, quoting unnamed sources.

Kuehmann apparently started his new roles in December after leaving both his positions at Apple and QuesTek Innovations, the article adds. He’s listed as the vice president of materials engineering at both SpaceX and Tesla, according to his LinkedIn profile. At the companies, he is respectively, “responsible for delivering materials innovations that enable the commercialization of space and a multi-planetary civilization” and “responsible for delivering materials innovations that accelerate the world’s transition to a sustainable future.”

Kuehmann was Apple’s director of product design from June 1997 to June 2015. He was also on the board of directors for QuesTek Innovations from June 1997 to June 2015. QuesTek (www.questek.com) specializes in integrated computational materials engineering (ICME). Kuehmann has a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering from Northwestern University and a BSE in Aerospace Engineering from Arizona State University.
