Maybe everyone was sleepy after staying up early Saturday morning to order a new iPhone, but it was a slow news day. Today we cover:
- Apple is expecting to break sales records for iPhone sales on an opening weekend
- How to prepare for the iOS 9 update on Wednesday
- Kardashians. Need we say more?
- HopStop transit mapping service to stop
The text version is below, and you can view today's video here.
Hi, I’m Steve Sande from Apple World Today, and this is the AWT News Update for September 14, 2015. Our sponsor this month is MacPaw, developers of CleanYourMac, Gemini, Hider 2, and Encrypto for Mac. Check out their apps on the web at macpaw.com.
Did you pre-order an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus on Saturday morning, or any other time over the weekend for that matter? If you did, you weren’t alone as Apple is saying that the new phones are well on the way to breaking all records for opening weekend iPhone sales. I ordered a 6s Plus and found the ordering process through the Apple Store app to be faster and smoother than at any time in the past. Now, if they could just automatically order a new phone for me every year, that would be even easier.
iOS 9 is coming in two days, so you’ll want to make sure that you’re ready for the update. If you are able to run iOS 8 on your current device, you’ll be able to run iOS 9. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you want to upgrade, as older hardware can be quite slow under the new operating system. By “older hardware,” we’re talking about the iPhone 4s, iPad 2, iPad 3 and the iPad mini. It’s always a good idea to consider cleaning out old, unused apps, since your iOS device won’t have to restore them after the update is done. Finally, be sure to back up your device. If you already use iCloud backup for nightly automatic backups, you’re set. If not, make a backup to either iCloud or iTunes. Don’t do your update without having a prior backup, or you could regret it.
I know that all of you will be excited to hear this news: today, at the SoHo Apple Store in New York City, the Kardashian sisters showed off not one, not two, but way too many apps. Yes, you can get a Kim app, a Khloé app, and real live Kylie and Kendall Jenner apps! While I’m throwing up in my mouth over this travesty of major proportions, Apple is showing the Kim Kardashian West Official App in the Best New Apps list today… This is just not right.
Apple acquired a transit mapping startup called HopStop back in 2013 to help improve transit directions in the built-in Maps app. Well, since iOS 9 will support transit maps for a number of major cities in the near future, Apple is shutting down the HopStop service. Sadly, it doesn’t appear that all of the cities that HopStop supports — including places in Australia, Israel and Russia — are in the iOS 9 Maps app. In the meantime, we can only give you one suggestion: continue to use the Google Maps app for your transit information.
I’ll be back tomorrow afternoon with another edition of the AWT News Update.
