In Midia Research’s “Predictions for 2016” report — as noted by Music Business Worldwide — music business analyst Mark Mulligan predicts that Apple Music will have nearly 8 million subscribers by year’s end with that number hitting 20 million in 2016.
He notes that Apple’s music service “went from zero to the No.2 streaming service in a matter of months in mid-2015.” Twenty million subscribers still won’t catch Spotify, but will solidify Apple’s runner-up position.
“The wildcards in the equation are whether Apple can do a better job of pushing users from iTunes Radio to Apple Music and what happens when Spotify restates its subscriber number to reflect the impact of $1 a month three-month trials,” says Mulligan.
In October Apple said Apple Music had 6.5 million paying customers four months after its launch. The service costs $9.99 per month (you can try it free for three months). There’s a family plan for $14.99/month providing service for up to six family members. All you need to do is set up iCloud Family Sharing on your iOS device or Mac and invite family members to join.
