On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they're popular and deserve mention. Here are today's picks for iOS and OS X.
Apple released its winners for the Best of 2015 yesterday, so today we're going to take a look at some of the best of the best.
Lara Croft and Tomb Raider have been around for a while, but the new Lara Croft GO ($4.99 with in-app purchases) from Square Enix was the top game of 2015. Why? Imagine having 101 puzzles that you have to complete, all set in a beautiful world of visuals with a stunning soundtrack. The game has brought the Tomb Raider franchise to a whole new level.
Apocalyptic fun! Fallout Shelter (free with in-app purchases) was the #2 game of 2015, with the smiling Pip-Boy building an underground vault for dwellers, helping you attract more dwellers, protecting you from the radioactive wasteland and its dangers, and makin' babies.
It doesn't always take great graphics or a compelling soundtrack to make a game great. In the case of Mr. Jump (free with in-app purchases), just having the motor skills to help the protagonist make it through a bunch of tricky levels is enough to give this game the #3 spot in the Apple Games of 2015 rankings.
OS X Apps/Updates
Over in the world of Mac, the Best of 2015 were no less impressive. The Game of the Year for OS X was Pillars of Eternity (currently on sale for $33.99, with in-app purchases), a stunningly beautiful role-playing game from MP Digital and Obsidian. Many of the environments are pre-rendered for quick play, and you lead your band of companions around the realm in search of treasures. It's simply spectacular.
Another beautiful RPG came in second in the Game of the Year rankings. This one brings you into the world of Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor ($24.99). You are Talion, a Gondorian Ranger of the Black Gate who is killed, then resurrected to venture on a quest of vengeance and discovery. Find out what it's like to be a wraith!
The world of fantasy appears to have captured the imagination of many Mac gamers, as one of the other popular Best Games of 2015 was Dungeons 2 ($39.99 with in-app purchases). Here your goal is to fulfill the Dungeon Lord's insatiable quest for vengeance by recruiting monsters to do his bidding. Dungeon 2 includes multiplayer mode with up to four players.
