Yesterday's AWT News Update mentioned that Apple's content chief, Eddy Cue, had stated that there were "over 2,000" apps in the Apple TV App Store. The AppFigures blog tends to follow things a bit more closely than Mr. Cue, and they came out with some detailed stats on how the newest App Store is faring one month into its lifetime.
The biggest news is that there are definitely "over 2,000" apps, with AppFigures showing 2,624 apps since 11/3/2015. Estimating the current growth, the bloggers at AppFigures figure that the Apple TV App Store will reach about "5,000 apps in about a month and 10,000 apps in early 2016".
Once again in line with Eddy Cue's comments, the biggest areas for Apple TV Apps are Games and Entertainment. Games made up 1,002 of the total apps, about 38% of all Apple TV apps. One surprise captured in the AppFigures data is that 39% of the apps on the Apple TV App Store are paid apps. That's quite different from the expectation of having a lot of free apps with in-app purchases.
The final surprise was that although games are the biggest category in the Apple TV App Store, they only accounted for 8 of the top 50 apps.
