Yesterday I reviewed a USB-C to USB adapter that's perfect for the 12-inch MacBook. Today I'm taking a look at something else that is a great accompaniment to the little MacBook -- the Inateck FE2008C 2.5-inch Portable HDD Enclosure with USB-C (US$24.99 through Amazon - affiliate link).
What Inateck has done is to create a tiny, tool-free hard disk enclosure that works with any standard 2.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD. Want a speedy backup drive for your MacBook? Grab a 1TB, 7200 RPM HD for about $75, slap it into the enclosure, plug it into your MacBook and use Disk Utility to prep it for use.
The cool thing about this enclosure is that it's extremely easy to swap out drives. You could theoretically also have a 2.5-inch SATA SSD hanging around that you want to use for saving video content; just dismount and unplug the HDD, slide open the enclosure, pull out the HDD and push in the SSD.
The shell of the enclosure is machined from aluminum, while the sliding access door is plastic. There's just one LED to denote activity, the USB-C port, and a short USB-C to USB-C cable. Inateck smartly included a small foam pad that fits inside the enclosure to keep spinning hard drives from vibrating too loudly while in the box.
I tried the Portable HDD Enclosure with a pair of 2.5-inch drives that I have laying around, and found the process of installing drives to be drop-dead simple. The enclosure has cooling ports on the end opposite of the USB-C port, and I never felt the enclosure get too warm.
Any gotchas? My only concern is that the slide-on plastic door could pop off if the enclosure was jostled or bumped, so it would be nice to have a small mechanical latch that would provide a positive closure.
Inexpensive, USB-C friendly, and easy to install bare drives in, the Inateck FE2008C 2.5-inch Portable HDD Enclosure with USB-C is a solid little unit that can be combined with just about any standard 2.5-inch SATA drive to create portable storage for your MacBook.
