Notable apps and app updates for October 8, 2015

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they're popular and deserve mention. Here are today's picks for iOS and Mac OS X:

iOS Apps/Updates

Choo Choo Apps has announced Choo Choo Park 1.0.0, the company's first children's educational app developed exclusively for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. The US$1.99 app starts with a black and white scene that every child can make come to life by coloring all the different elements and Choo Choo characters. Users can interact with familiar objects you can see in a park like swings, seesaws, and plants.

Paper Town is a new game where you create, buy and sell drawings to earn virtual coins. It allows you to buy a section of land where you can create and display your drawings. You earn some coins by liking other drawings, and a lot more by receiving likes. The virtual economy rewards users for being creative and artistic. Each drawing can be bought or sold, allowing you trade your drawings for others in this competitive but rewarding game. There's a free version of Paper Towns, but you can pay $1.99 to remove all adds.

Pixite has released Assembly 1.0. The $2.99 app lets users create logos, characters, icons and illustrative scenes using tools in a simple package.

LoftLab has introduced Radio Royale 1.0. The free app combines a radio player with social networking. Users can access FM and AM radio stations broadcasting live within their local coverage area. They can also see who else in the global Radio Royale community is listening to the same radio station, and chat with them in real time via in-app messaging.

Mac OS X Apps/Updates

ooVoo has updated its Mac app with a complete interface redesign and new features. ooVoo 6.0 now offers an integrated video calling and messaging experience in an one-window design and sleeker interface. This brand new look is fully reflective of the experience found in ooVoo's award winning mobile app.

Chief Product Officer Rajesh Midha says the ooVoo for Mac interface redesign encompasses all of ooVoo's most popular features, including: high-definition one-on-one video calling, 12-way group video calling, voice calls, and screen sharing. This release also includes an in-app purchase option for ooVoo Premium, which provides users an ad-free experience.

ooVoo 6.0 requires Mac OS X 10.9 or higher. It's available free at the Mac App Store.

BinaryFruit has driven DriveDx, its Mac OS X solution for SSD and HDD health diagnostics and monitoring, to version 1.4.1. The upgrade supports external USB/FireWire drive S.M.A.R.T. diagnostic on OS X El Capitan.

DriveDx 1.4.1 requires Mac OS X 10.6.8. It can be purchased from the BinaryFruit website. The Mac App Store update is coming soon. A 10-day trial version is available for download.

St. Clair Software has delivered a 2.1 update for App Tamer, its Mac utility that manages applications to deliver more efficient CPU usage, increased battery life and quieter operation.

App Tamer's AutoStop capability automatically slows down or pauses applications when you switch away from them, and then restarts them when you click back to them. Version 2.1 delivers compatibility with El Capitan and improves support for a number of applications.

App Tamer requires Mac OS X 10.7 or higher. A demo is available at the St. Clair website. A license to continue using it after the trial period is $14.95. If you bought App Tamer 2.0 this update is free. If you purchased App Tamer 1.x after July 1, 2013, the update is also free. If you purchased your license before that date you can upgrade for $7.95.
