On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they're popular and deserve mention. Here are today's picks for iOS and Mac OS X:
iOS apps and updates
It's new, it's hot, and it is timely. NBA 2K16 (US$7.99 with in-app purchases) is the officially-licensed game of the NBA and has a ton of new features this year, along with updated rosters and a way to earn virtual currency. The graphics are amazing, and there's a new soundtrack curated by DJ Mustard, DJ Khaled and the legendary hip-hop producer DJ Premier. The animations are smoother and the players are even more realistic than ever. It's universal, so play on either your iPhone or iPad.
Ellen DeGeneres plays this game on her show, and it's a hit. Heads Up! ($0.99 with in-app purchases) is a Charades-like game where you hold the iPhone or iPad away from your face, get clues from your friends, and try to guess what's on the screen. Once you're hooked, there are multiple decks available with even more fun cards for just $0.99 each. Really a great party game!
Mac OS X apps and updates
Bored this weekend? Here's a minimalist Mac arcade game with a lot of challenge. Octagon (free with in-app purchases) has had over 1 million downloads on all platforms, and it's hard enough to keep you playing but not so difficult that you'll get frustrated. The in-app purchases for higher tiers are reasonably priced as well, starting at $0.99 and going up to $2.99.
And here's another popular game for Mac -- one that will get your heart pounding! CSR Racing is free with in-app purchases, and lets you race hot cars like the BMW M3, Chevy Corvette or Audi R8 with tweaks in a drag race on deserted city streets. It has amazing graphics (full Retina resolution) and the lighting will have you believe you're actually on the streets. The in-app purchases can get a bit expensive, although many are available for $4.99 or less.
