VAVA Voom 20 is a good speaker for the poolside, beach, or picnic table

VAVA’s Voom 20 is a handsome, durable, portable speaker with good audio quality. At $79.99, it’s a value buy, as it has excellent battery life (about 10 hours on a full charge of the 5200mAh lithium-ion battery) and a certain degree of ruggedness thanks to its IPX5 splash-proof rating and rubberized body.

You can also keep your audio devices recharged via the Voom 20’s USB output port. When its battery is running out of juice, just plug it in, power it up, and you’re good to go.

The portable speaker has a variety of connection options. You can use Bluetooth, which works great with iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches. You can use NFC for wireless connecting to NFC-enabled devices. And you can use the 3.5mm auxiliary jack for hooking up to devices such as Macs.

The Voom 20 has a black matte rubber top, bottom, and sides with two grilles on each side of the speaker. The two drivers and one subwoofer fire out the front, while the second subwoofer faces Voom 20’s backside. The top of the speaker features a power button, volume controls, and a play/pause/call button. A small rubber cover on the back side hides the aux port, micro-USB port for recharging, and 1A charging port.

Despite its small size (7.58 x 2.81 x 2.38 inches and 1.53 pounds), the Voom 20 packs two 8W drivers and two subwoofers. The speaker offers good audio for a device its size. Bass is solid, and it can pump out quite a bit of volume — though I noticed distortion when I really cranked my tunes up.

The Voom 20’s convenient multipoint technology lets the speaker pair with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. Switching between the two happens seamlessly — and even automatically when a call comes in on the device’s speakerphone (yep it has a speakerphone).

If you need an affordable speaker for the poolside, the beach, picnic, etc., VAVA’s speaker is worth a listen.
