NEC’s PA322UHD-2 is an excellent choice for professionals who need a spacious UHD screen

If you’re a professional who needs a pro-grade Ultra High Definition (UHD) monitor, there’s not one better than the PA322UHD-2 from NEC Display Solutions of America. It delivers excellent color, gray-scale and 4K performance (with a native resolution of 3840 x 2160), though it’s rather bulky and expensive (about $3,000 — though it does include a four-year warranty).

The PA322UHD-2 includes all the features of NEC’s PA322UHD model and updates the option slot with support for 4K UHD inputs, including an installed, switchable DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 option. The Open Pluggable Specification (OPS)-compliant option slot gives videographers, photographers, print production specialists and others added flexibility to use the PA322UHD-2 in an even wider range of existing workflows.

The display uses a wide gamut white LED backlight and an IGZO technology IPS-type LCD panel that delivers excellent image quality with lower power consumption than comparable LCD displays while delivering 99.2% coverage of the Adobe RGB color space. Pros in color-critical fields now have more options for 4K UHD over a single cable, including the latest HDMI 2.0 standard. The PA322UHD has a 14-bit Look Up Table (LUT) for precise calibration, wide color-gamut coverage (99.2% of the Adobe RGB color spectrum), 350 cd/m2 brightnes, 1000:1 contrast ratio, and support for a multitude of refresh rates, including 24, 30, 50, 60, 85, 100, and 120 Hz modes.

The NEC display offers Picture in Picture and Picture by Picture mode, which splits the screen in half or in quarters to up to four full HD images in one or more color spaces in real time. It comes with free MultiProfiler software for complete control of picture modes, enabling additional presets like REC 709, BT.2020 and simple ICC profile emulation.

ou’ll need plenty of space for the versatile monitor. It measures 17.4 x 29.3 inches and weighs just over 31 pound. That’s without the 14-pound stand attached, which adds an extra eight inches to the overall depth. However, the stand supports both landscape and portrait modes — and the image can be automatically rotated when the monitor is rotated.

However, you get lots of bang for the desktop real estate that’s consumed. The PA322UHD-2 packs a USB 3.0 hub (two up, three down) with DisplaySync Pro, and a high resolution keyboard/ video/mouse (KVM) switch that can control two computers with only one keyboard and mouse. There’s a plethora of display ports, including two DisplayPort 1.2 inputs, one HDMI 2.0 input and the option of either two DVI-D or four HDMI 1.4 inputs.

Alas, for we Mac users, built-in Thunderbolt connectivity would have been nice, but if you use the mini Display Port cable included in the box, that works, too. The PA322UHD-2 also has two internal 2W speakers. They offer good, but not great, sound.

The NEC monitor’s resolution is impressive — as long as you don’t compare it to the display on the 27-inch iMac’s Retina 4K display. It’s 4096 x 2304 resolution is the best computer screen around.

Still, with a self-adjusting mode that doesn’t require a computer, a wide-gamut option, and a comprehensive color feature set, the PA322UHD-2 is an excellent choice for professionals who need a spacious UHD screen.
