FCA, the North American automaker Fiat-Chrysler America, is releasing a new complimentary software update designed to add Apple Siri Eyes Free capability to the proprietary Uconnect infotainment system for nearly two million properly equipped vehicles dating back to the 2013 model year.
Siri Eyes Free is an extension of Apple's Siri functionality for enabling voice control of an iOS mobile device that is linked with a car's in-dash audio system. With Siri Eyes Free, drivers can speak natural language voice commands in order to operate the mobile device as well as the car's sound or in-vehicle infotainment system. Siri Eyes Free — introduced in 2012 — operates via a voice command button on the car's steering wheel, enabling the driver to make and receive calls, select and play music, audibly send and receive text messages, access Maps and get directions, audibly receive notifications, set reminders and more.
"With the addition of the Siri Eyes Free feature for later model-year vehicles, more customers will have an opportunity to integrate their iPhones with Uconnect while keeping their hands on the wheel and their eyes on road," says Tricia Hecker, global head of Connected Services, FCA. "By adding Siri Eyes Free capability, customers will be able to use their voice to dictate and send messages, select specific songs, create reminder notifications and set calendar entries."
Drivers can activate Siri Eyes Free from the voice button on the steering wheel and speak natural language voice commands to send text messages, play music, set reminders, place phone calls and access turn-by-turn directions. Drivers simply push and hold the voice recognition button on the steering wheel until the Siri screen appears on the 8.4-inch touch screen and the user hears the audible tones. Siri Eyes Free is compatible with an Apple iPhone 4s or later.
The new software update is available for the following vehicles equipped with a Uconnect 8.4 touchscreen system: 2013-2015 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500; 2013-2015 Dodge Viper; 2014-2015 Dodge Durango; 2015 Dodge Challenger and Charger; 2014-2015 Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee; 2015 Jeep Renegade; and 2015 Chrysler 200 and 300.
To download and install the Siri Eyes Free software update, vehicle owners can go here to receive the software and watch the video for step-by-step instructions on how to perform the update themselves or customers can schedule a service appointment to have the software update installed at their preferred dealership. Additional charges for a service appointment may apply.
Launched in 2003, Uconnect systems are FCA's in-vehicle connectivity centers, designed to keep consumers connected, entertained and, most importantly, focused on the road. Each FCA vehicle comes equipped with a Uconnect system that provides drivers with a range of available communication, navigation, entertainment features and connected services.
