Remember just two years ago when billionaire investor Carl Icahn jumped on the Apple bandwagon, bought billions in Apple shares, and told everyone else to do the same? Icahn was also the person who pushed Apple to do its big share buyback program and suggested that the company pay investors regular dividends as well. Icahn today announced that he’s cashed out of Apple, so perhaps now the company can start ignoring his “advice” and get on with the business of making great consumer electronic products. As noted by one investment site, Icahn pulled out of Apple with a few hundred million dollars of profit from the increase in share price over the past two years, so he definitely made money on the deal. As he’s done with so many other companies, Icahn used his money to influence the financial policies of the firms, then dropped out when it was convenient for him. He will not be missed, and we’re sure that this week’s drop in share price will encourage others to buy the shares he has made available.

Today we’ve added new feature to Apple World Today, one you’ll be seeing and hearing a lot about. Our new Deals Shop is the result of a partnership between Apple World Today and StackCommerce, and it brings you deals on the products and services you want. Most of the deals are short duration discounts, so be sure to jump on them when you see them! Better yet, sign up for our deals newsletter that will be show up in your inbox several times each week with the latest in Apple-related accessories and software. Check out the Shop at

One of the shining points in Tuesday’s dismal Apple earnings report was in services, which grew tremendously year over year. That growth was fueled in part by Apple Music, which is not only available on iOS but also on Android devices. Today Apple pushed out an update for Apple Music for Android, adding support for music video playback as well as allowing Android users to now sign up or upgrade to an Apple Music Family Membership in the app. The family plan runs just $14.99 per month and provides access for up to six people. The app is available for free from the Google Play Store and requires Android version 4.3.

We’ll be back tomorrow afternoon with another edition of the AWT News Update.
