Sponsored ads coming to Apple News (hey, when is the app coming to the Mac?)

Apple has introduced a new ad format for sponsored posts that will appear in users' news feeds alongside articles in the Apple News app, reports Business Insider. The new ad format was revealed in a developer-specification document for Apple's in-house mobile-advertising platform updated in March.

News runs across iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices, featuring ads powered by the iAd advertising platform. Ad options include a variety of inline and interstitial display banners and pre-roll video ads with performance and interactive media experiences.

Sponsored ads will "display directly in the content feeds, in line with News articles," and can link to an article in the News app. The advertising format is available for the iPhone and iPad versions of Apple News. The ads will be set in the same font as other articles in the News app, except for a small "sponsored" tag.

Speaking of Apple News, when is it coming to the Mac?
