How to use your Apple Watch in Nightstand Mode

watchOS 2 provides a new Nightstand mode for the Apple Watch that allows the smartwatch to serve as a bedside alarm clock. The Digital Crown and side button serve as snooze and off buttons for the alarm. You can enable Nightstand mode via your iPhone or on the Apple Watch itself.

To do so, via your iPhone:

  • Launch the Watch app on your iPhone.
  • Tap General.
  • Scroll down, then slide the switch next to Nightstand Mode to the On position.

To enable Nightstand mode directly on the Apple Watch:

  • Launch the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Scroll down and tap Nightstand Mode.
  • Slide the switch to the On position.

You're ready! Now you can use your watch even when you’re done wearing it for the day. Just place it on its side and connect the charger. The Apple Watch will automatically go into Nightstand mode, a digital display that illuminates whenever you touch the screen, the Digital Crown, or the side button. Nightstand mode even changes how the watch buttons function. When an alarm sounds, you press the side button to turn it off, or the Digital Crown to snooze.

To obtain watchOS 2, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone (which must be running iOS 9) and tap through My Watch > General > Software Update. Make sure your watch is in Bluetooth range of your iPhone and connected to its charger.
