The Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock is cool, but pricey

The new Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock from Apple is pretty cool, but is pricey ($79) for what you get.

It conveniently lets you charge your Apple smartwatch in a flat position with either its band open or on its side. When docked on its side, the Apple Watch automatically goes into Nightstand mode, so you can also use it as your alarm clock.

The Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock uses the same inductive charging connector that comes with Apple Watch. It charges both the 38mm and 42mm models. It connects via the Lightning to USB Cable (one is included) and Apple 5W USB Power Adapter. It also comes in any color you want — as long as that color is white.

I haven’t weighed it, but the Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock is heavier than it looks. That’s a good thing, as the heft helps prevent it from accidentally sliding off a desk or bedside table.

However, it’s hard to recommend the Apple dock when you can get other charging docks that do more for less money. For example, the Griffin WatchStand Powered Charging Station works with both the Apple smartwatch and an iPhone — and it’s 20 bucks less than the Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock.
