Apple News Format docs appear in iOS Developer Library

During yesterday's Apple earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that close to 45 million iOS users are now reading articles in the iOS News app and that about 70 publishers are creating content in the Apple News Format. That format is getting a boost with the publication of the Apple News Format Reference on the iOS Developer Library.

As the introduction to the documentation notes, "Apple News Format is the custom JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) document format for News content. With Apple News Format, you can create beautifully crafted layouts with iOS font, rich photo galleries, videos, and animations -- all optimized for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch".

At the present time, most content in Apple News is pulled from RSS feeds. Those 70 publishers that Cook referred to have had access to the ability to create their own customized layouts. Interestingly, Apple's News API provides a way for specific content management systems such as WordPress and Drupal to submit articles to News upon publication on the original host.

Apple World Today currently publishes its RSS feed to News; as soon as we're able to get our content in a more "beautiful" Apple News Format view, we'll let you know.
